Sheriff's Office Chief Investigator Summerford Graduates Homeland Security Leadership Academy...

Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver is proud to announce Chief Investigator Josh Summerford’s graduation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Leadership Academy.  The academy is a two-week professional development and leadership training program designed for law enforcement command staff. It is a collaboration between Homeland Security and the National Sheriffs’ Association.  The training was conducted and funded by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), located in Glynco, Georgia. Attendees included law enforcement executives from over 22 state, local, and territorial police and sheriff agencies, representing 14 states and two territories.

After being chosen by the National Sheriffs’ Association and the Department of Homeland Security, Summerford participated in the leadership academy discussing contemporary issues facing law enforcement leaders.  Some of the topics covered included leadership in a crisis, the art of perception, exemplary leadership, emotional intelligence, and ethics in leadership. This was the fourth session of the academy, and Summerford is the third graduate from Alabama.

Summerford stated it was one of the best training experiences he’s ever had.  He said, “We had a chance to learn what has worked for other agencies, large and small, and how it has worked.”  The training stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in law enforcement. Summerford said, “I’m proud of the collaborative efforts and relationships we’ve built with our state and federal partners and our surrounding sheriff’s offices.  It’s allowing us to make significant progress in combating crime and improving public safety in Cherokee County.  No single agency can do it alone.  I am thankful for the opportunity afforded by Sheriff Shaver, the National Sheriffs’ Association, and FLETC to participate in this leadership academy."
