Possible Explosives Detonated by Law Enforcement

10/13/2013

According to Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver, on Friday October 11, 2013, acting on a tip, investigators located two green military type boxes reported to have contained possible explosives in the woods off County Road 45 in the Forney community.  Investigators requested the assistance of Gadsden Police Department’s Explosive Ordinance Device Unit, which responded and examined the cans. The Sheriff’s Office notified surrounding residents of the potential danger.   It was determined it was unsafe to attempt to move the containers to perform a complete exam, so it was decided the safest option was to detonate in place.  A detonation charge was placed on the device, and the suspect explosives burned out, signifying it was most likely road flares instead.  Anyone who comes upon an unknown or suspicious object such as this should call the authorities immediately.
